THE SURENAME RIZAL.
The realsurname of the Rizal family was Mercado which was adopted in 1731 by DomingoLamco. Rizal’s family acquired a second surname Rizal which was given bySpanish alcalde mayor of Laguna and a family friend.
The house of the Rizal family was one of thedistinguished stone houses in Calamba during Spanish times. It was a two storeybuilding, rectangular in shape, build of a adobe stones and hardwood, roofedwith red tiles.
The Rizalfamily belonged to the principalia, a town aristocracy in Spanish Philippines.It was one of the distinguished families in Calamba.
As evidenceof their affluence, they were able to build a large stone house. They owned acarriage and a private library (the largest in Calamba). They send theirchildren to colleges. They participated prominently in all social and religiousaffairs in the community.
The Rizalfamily led a happy life. Everyday the Rizal family heard mass in town churchparticularly during Sundays was also given ample time and freedom to play.
